India Tour of New Zealand 2026
New Zealand vs India, 1st ODI Match Preview
Wednesday, 4 November 2026
Toss Analysis
No clear toss preference. The decision should depend on the surface, wind conditions and overhead conditions at match time.
Team News
India enter this series with considerable experience in their batting department. The return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli is particularly important, especially in overseas conditions where experience against the new ball can make a difference.
Shubman Gill will captain India for the first three ODIs, while Shreyas Iyer has been named vice-captain.
India's squad also includes KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj.
One selection question will be the balance between batting depth and bowling options. India's pace attack will be without Jasprit Bumrah, who has been rested, and Prasidh Krishna, who is unavailable for the series.
Auqib Nabi has been added to the squad for the first three ODIs. Nitish Kumar Reddy is available only for the opening match.
NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand will be led by Mitchell Santner.
The home side have a combination of experienced international players and familiar conditions in their favour.
Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Tom Latham, Michael Bracewell and Will Young provide batting options, while Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson and Jacob Duffy offer pace-bowling options.
There are some important injury concerns ahead of the opening match.
Devon Conway has been ruled out of the first ODI after suffering concussion in a training collision with Matt Henry. Henry himself is being monitored, and his availability remains uncertain.
Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman are also unavailable because of injuries. Tim Seifert has been named as Conway's replacement
Key Matchups
Rohit Sharma vs New Zealand's New-Ball Attack
Rohit's approach during the powerplay will be an important part of India's batting strategy. Eden Park's short straight boundaries offer opportunities to attack, but the new ball could provide some assistance to the seamers.
If Rohit gets through the initial overs, he can put pressure on the bowling side by increasing the scoring rate.
Virat Kohli vs Mitchell Santner
This is an interesting middle-overs matchup.
Santner's ability to control the scoring rate and Kohli's ability to rotate strike will make this contest important. Kohli will look to avoid getting tied down, while Santner will try to create pressure through consistent lines and changes of pace.
Daryl Mitchell vs India's Spin Attack
Mitchell has been one of New Zealand's important ODI batters.
His ability to handle spin and accelerate during the middle overs makes him a key player. Kuldeep Yadav could be particularly important in this matchup.
Glenn Phillips vs India's Bowling Attack
Phillips has the ability to change the momentum of an innings quickly. His aggressive approach can be effective at Eden Park, where the straight boundaries are relatively short.
India will need to avoid giving him opportunities to attack predictable lengths.
Strategy Angles
There are three areas worth monitoring before making any match-related decision.
First 10 Overs: India's opening partnership against the New Zealand seamers could determine the direction of the first innings.
Middle Overs: The contest between India's spin options and New Zealand's middle order could be decisive.
Death Overs: Eden Park's shorter boundaries make execution particularly important. Bowlers who miss their lengths could concede boundaries quickly.
From a player-performance perspective, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Daryl Mitchell deserve attention. However, final selections should depend on the confirmed playing XIs and available market prices.
